Congratulations Affinity Student, Filipe Conceicao on your overtime goal!September 07, 2014
Freshman Filipe Conceicao scored in the opening seconds of the 103rd minute off a Patrick Gurser layoff to lift Gardner-Webb to a 1-0 extra time victory over USC Upstate on Saturday night.
Gardner-Webb (1-2) outshot USC Upstate (0-1-1) by an 11-7 margin on the night, including a 5-3 advantage in the first half, as the Runnin' Bulldogs attempted 10 corners to the Spartans' seven.
Conceicao struck the only goal for either side in the match, opening his collegiate account in the 103rd minute, while Gurser notched his first assist of the season. Ali Al-Gashamy (Kristiansand, Norway) paced the attack with three shots, including two on frame, as sophomore Matthew Swan(Newport, South Wales, UK) stopped each of the three shots he faced to keep his first clean sheet of the campaign.
Matt Flynn, Dustin Bailey, and Peter Bannister each recorded a shot on frame for Upstate, as Jack Rubin stopped five of six shots he faced.
Neither team would find the back of the net through the opening 90 minutes of regulation, with perhaps the best scoring chance for either side coming just three seconds before full time, when Gurser nearly got a head on a cross from the wing.
The remained deadlocked at nil-nil through the first extra time period and into the second, when Conceicao made a run into the box, jumped on the end of a ball from Gurser, and tucked the finish into the bottom corner to lift Gardner-Webb to victory with his first collegiate goal at the 102:02 mark.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Friday, September 12 when the Runnin' Bulldogs square off with Lipscomb at 4:30 p.m. in the first match of the Belmont Invitational, hosted by Belmont University, in Nashville, Tenn.
