COLUMBIA, S.C.- Matthew Swan recorded three saves including a penalty kick, but the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 contest to the University of South Carolina in an exhibition match on Sunday evening at Stone Stadium.
The contest was the first of the season for both teams, and instead of the normal two 45 minute halves, the match featured three 30 minute periods with the starters playing the first two periods and the substitutes getting most of the action in the final 30 minutes.
Swan played well for the Runnin' Bulldogs recording three saves in 60 minutes of action. Jeffrey Torda was chosen to take the PK for the Gamecocks, but his ensuing shot was denied by Swan to keep the game scoreless.
Despite outshooting GWU 7-0, South Carolina was not able to put a shot past Swan and the game would remain scoreless after the first period of action.
The Gamecocks finally managed to find of the back of the net in the 50th minute. Torda put in a fantastic cross into the box and Bjorn Gudjonsson headed it into the goal to give South Carolina the lead.
William Liles replaced Swan in net for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the final period of play, and performed well in his first action of the season recording two saves.
The Gamecocks added two more goals and would go for the 3-0 victory over Gardner-Webb. The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action next Tuesday (Aug. 25) for their final exhibition match when they play host to Brevard College at 7:00 p.m.
